Gravel is a great addition to any garden, whatever its size. As well as being a relatively cheap aggregate to source, it can make outdoor spaces more appealing and serve important functions such as reducing surface water flooding. Here are some of the best ways to use gravel in your garden:
1. Decorative feature on driveways
Gravel can be used to create an attractive, durable driveway. Usually a size of 14mm or larger is preferable as this means that it is less likely to be easily dispersed when walked or driven over. It also reduces the chance of it becoming wedged in car tyres or trodden into the house. Before laying the gravel, clear the drive of weeds and cover with a weed membrane. Rake to the right level and depth before washing to get rid of any dust.
2. Pathways across a lawn
Aggregate being used for pathways can be slightly smaller than driveways, around a 10mm grade or larger is normally best. When laying the gravel, it is important to tip it out as evenly as possible to ensure a uniform coverage overall.
3. To reflect light
Another use of gravel is to help reflect light and make certain areas of the garden brighter. Virtually any size aggregate can be used for this purpose, the key is to use material that is as light as possible so that it is effective at bouncing sunlight around the outdoor space.
