Understanding soil types for vegetable gardens

At Mone Bros DIY, we know a thing or two about topsoil (it’s one of our most popular products), but for many gardeners starting out in the vegetable game, choosing the right products for your vegetable patch can be a daunting task.

At Mone Bros DIY, we know a thing or two about topsoil (it’s one of our most popular products), but for many gardeners starting out in the vegetable game, choosing the right products for your vegetable patch can be a daunting task.

Knowing which soil type is best for your vegetable is a good thing to know as it will improve your produce in the long run.

Here’s our breakdown of soil types to help Yorkshire gardeners along the way:

1)    Soil texture- soil is made from three components: clay, silt and sand. The most fertile soil has equal parts of all three, making it easy to drain and dig. At Mone Bros DIY in Leeds, our topsoil is highly recommended for vegetable patches due to its high-quality components and ratios. This premium topsoil is ideal for gardeners wanting the best for their outdoors.

2)    Testing – it is important that you regularly check your soil in both dry and wet conditions to see if it is still good quality or whether you need fresh topsoil. If the soil is hard when dry and sticky when wet, then it is likely to be clay and will need replenishing. If it is light and easy to dig, then chances are it is sand. Both of these aren’t good conditions for vegetables.

3)    Always look to improve – regardless of your topsoil type, it is important that you always look to improve it to get the best for your vegetables. Organic matter such as homemade compost and leafmould are great things to add to your soil to improve the nutritional content.

Our topsoil is a high standard virgin topsoil which is screened down to 10mm. For more information on our topsoil product, contact our Leeds team on 0113 267 4386.
